Soon, Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile should bring to the market a new version of its Xperia Z2 handset, one that will sport a smaller form factor and that appears to have just emerged online in a series of leaked photos on Weibo.

No specific info on the hardware specifications of the upcoming phone has been provided as of now, but the leaked images suggest that it could land on shelves with looks similar to those of its bigger brother.

Supposedly called Xperia Z2 Compact, the handset should arrive as the successor of last year’s Xperia Z1 Compact, and it could sport the same high-end specs as its predecessor.

This means that users might see it arriving on shelves with a 1/2.3 20.7-megapixel camera on the back, with a single LED flash, as SlashGear notes in a recent article.

At the same time, the leaked images suggest that the phone will also include NFC capabilities inside and that it might feature a glass back cover, and not the plastic one present on the Xperia Z1 Compact. However, there’s no telling on whether Sony will indeed make this change to it.

The same as the predecessors, the new device is expected to be water-resistant, although no official confirmation on this has been provided as of now.

There is rubbery shielding present on the device, though it is not certain on whether it will be present around the camera and LED flash as well, which would ensure water-resistance.

As mentioned above, the phone is expected to arrive on the market with specs similar to those packed inside Xperia Z2, the same as it happened with Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact last year.

This means that we’ll see it announced with a full HD touchscreen display, as well as with a quad-core Snapdragon processor inside. Moreover, it should offer support for external storage space through a microSD memory card slot that would accommodate cards of up to 128GB.

The usual set of connectivity capabilities and sensors should also be included inside the phone, along with one of the latest versions of Google’s Android operating system (either Android 4.4.2 or Android 4.4.3).

No official confirmation on the availability of Xperia Z2 Compact has been provided as of now, despite the fact that rumors on it did emerge before as well. However, we could see Sony making the announcement sooner rather than later, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
