Sony Mobile is one of the first mobile phone makers out there to have started the delivery of the new Android 4.4.4 KitKat platform release to its users, and its Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition is one of the latest to have received it.

Last week, we saw the update starting to arrive on smartphones such as Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z1, as well as on the Xperia Z Ultra. The Google Play Edition of the handset was included in the rollout as well, it seems.

In all fairness, Sony Xperia Z Ultra is not the first Google Play Edition device to get a taste of the update, but it is among the first of them, which should make its owners happy.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Android 4.4.4 KitKat was made official only a few weeks ago, as a small update for the mobile operating system, packing mainly security enhancements.

The main purpose of this software release was to patch a series of vulnerabilities in OpenSSL, which had been discovered in previous flavors of the KitKat OS.

At the same time, the new firmware upgrade was pushed out with a series of small fixes packed inside, such as one for a camera bug that was discovered in Android 4.4.3.

Apparently, this fix was included in the official Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Xperia Z Ultra last week, and the Google Play Edition of the device will receive it as well.

The Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system version was initially made available for Nexus phones out there, but also started to arrive on Moto G GPe phones a few days ago. The update is being rolled out over-the-air and will arrive on mobile devices with build number KTU84P attached.

As soon as the new OS release is available for their Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition phones, users will receive a notification on the matter. Some of them have already updated their smartphones, it seems.

However, we should note that the update will be deployed on handsets in stages, which means that some users might actually have to wait a few days before grabbing it.

Those who do not want to wait can head over to Settings > About phone > Software update to hit the Check now button. If the update is available, they will be able to download and install it immediately.

At the same time, as this thread on XDA-Developers reads, the update is available for online download too, which means that users can install it using a desktop computer now.
