As we've been telling you, Sony has officially abandoned its notebook business, selling its VAIO line to a Japanese company.

This week it was also revealed that Sony would be pulling out of the eBook reader altogether, even if until now it was believed that the company would cease selling eReaders only in the US.

So from now on, the company should be free to focus on its smartphone and tablet endeavors. So far, Sony has been regularly refreshing its tablet portfolio. Back at MWC 2014, Sony introduced the Xperia Z2 Tablet, which is the world’s slimmest waterproof tablet.

But one of the industry’s top events will soon take place in Berlin. We’re talking about IFA and here we expect Sony to be ready to show us its new tablet product. How so?

Well, the SGP621 device was spotted making an appearance on the Indonesian website Postel, which indicated the Japanese tech giant might be working towards a Sony Xperia Tablet Z3 or Xperia Z2 Ultra.

The new product is tablet or a phablet without a doubt, because the Xperia Z Ultra has been codenamed SGP3XX, while the first Xperia Tablet appeared for the first time in the media as the SGP5XX.

We’re just guessing about the name of the tablet, because in all possibility the company might choose to change the name or series of the upcoming tablet altogether. The tab could arrive bundled with a 3G modem and with phone calling capabilities.

Notebook Italia speculates that in order for this to be the case, the slate should arrive with a 7-inch or 8-inch form factor, thus being smaller than the company’s current flagship, the Xperia Z2 Tablet. So it’s not far-fetched to assume that Sony is planning the advent of a new tablet line altogether.

On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra has a 6.44-inch tablet and has been released as a small tablet companion in the company’s home country, Japan.

It would be interesting to see what improvements Sony might add to a tablet like the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet. For example, the company might replace the full HD display and add a 4K panel instead. That being said, the processor department might stand a bump or two.

The current Xperia Z2 Tablet is selling in a lot of markets across the globe and customers can even pick up the LTE variant, on top of the Wi-Fi. The tablet ships with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, so you won’t need to worry about updates.

We’ll keep you posted once more info about the new tablet becomes available.
