Allegedly leaked document unveils Sony's plans for the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update

Japanese mobile phone maker Sony confirmed a few months back that many of its latest Xperia handsets would be upgraded to the latest Android iterations out there, and some more info on the matter is now available.

The company made the Android 4.4.2 KitKat platform release available for its Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact users back in April, while also kicking off its rollout to Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Z Ultra phones last month.

As it turns out, the handset vendor will make the same platform iteration available for handsets such as Sony Xperia SP, Xperia E1, Xperia M2 (dual) and T2 Ultra (dual) starting next month.

The info comes from justaboutphones.com, which claims to have put hands on a leaked document coming from the mobile phone maker, one that appears to unveil all of the company’s current plans for the Android 4.4.2 update.

According to said document, Sony is also working on the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for the Xperia Z2. At the moment, the new firmware is awaiting certification from Google, it seems.

As mentioned above, Sony has already confirmed plans to make the Android 4.4.2 update available for more devices, but the company has mentioned only Xperia E1, Xperia M2 and T2 Ultra as being set to receive it.

However, previous rumors suggested that the vendor was considering bringing the platform iteration to the Xperia SP too, and the new report appears to confirm that.

Moreover, it appears that Sony has actually delayed the roll out, as it was initially set to kick it off in June. Issues with Xperia Z and Android 4.4.2 have reportedly determined it to take this decision.

With no official announcement on this made as of now, we’ll have to take the info unveiled through the aforementioned leaked document with a grain of salt.

There have been a lot of controversial reports regarding Sony’s plans for updating the Xperia SP to newer operating system versions, and the mobile phone maker hasn’t done much to clarify its position on the matter.

Although users have long voiced their need for the update, Sony has yet to offer an official confirmation on the matter, and we can only hope that it will bring good news to its users.

After all, it would not be the only company to update an older smartphone to the Android 4.4.2 KitKat platform release. Samsung did the same with the Galaxy S III, albeit only for a small number of models, and not for the international variant.

With July nearing fast, we might learn more on the matter soon, hopefully coming from Sony itself, so stay tuned to learn the news.
