Starting as a rumor a few weeks ago, the idea of Sony bringing the entire Xperia NXT lineup in Canada through its official stores has just been confirmed by the Japanese company.

The handset maker has just announced that the first smartphone in the Xperia NXT series, Sony Xperia S will be exclusively available to Sony Stores across Canada starting April 17.

Although the company does not mention any pricing options for the Xperia S, it confirms the smartphone will be available in limited quantities.

Further, it appears that the Xperia S sold in Sony Stores will be fully compatible with Rogers’ wireless network, though there are no mentions of the phone being carrier-bound.

As expected, Sony Xperia S will be delivered with Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system put of the box, but will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade probably a few weeks later.

The phone runs Sony’s Timescape UI, which has been redesigned “to match the minimalistic design of the hardware.”

Given the fact that the smartphone does not come with Android 4.0 at launch, Xperia S’ main attractions remain the stunning 4.3-inch HD (720 x 1280 pixels) Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA engine, as well as the 12-megapixel rear camera with Sony Exmor R.

Hardware-wise, the Xperia S is equipped with a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor and packs 32GB of internal memory and 1GB of RAM.

Last but not least, Xperia S is also NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled, which allows users to share content with each other with a simple tap.

We are thrilled to offer Canadians the first Sony smartphone and the Sony Store is a natural retail partner for this premium device. Combining exceptional performance with elegant design and a myriad of entertainment possibilities, the Xperia S embodies the connected entertainment experience Sony Mobile represents,” said Peter Farmer, VP of marketing, North America, Sony Mobile Communications.
