Apple and Samsung enjoy the highest retention rates among smartphone makers

Sony’s Xperia smartphones are seen by many as some of the most appealing devices out there, though it seems that they do not enjoy the best retention rate possible.

In fact, a recent survey compiled by Statista for the Wall Street Journal shows that Xperia devices actually have one of the lowest retention rates out there, even if they are in front of devices coming from other manufacturers.

To be more precise, said survey unveils that Sony has seen a retention rate of only 24 percent in 2013, which puts it far behind other brands, as XperiaBlog notes.

Motorola and BlackBerry were placed behind it, with 22 percent and 21 percent retention rate, respectively, but Apple and Samsung came in at the top, with 76 percent and 58 percent, respectively.

The results of this survey are based on interviews conducted in the United States, the UK and Australia. 3,000 people were interviewed as part of the survey.

One thing that should be noted here is that there’s no telling on whether the numbers mentioned above are indeed representative for each of the aforementioned brands.

With hundreds of millions of users already owning a smartphone, we do believe that it’s actually hard to say how the majority feels about the specific device in their hand when surveying only several hundreds of them.

Of course, Sony isn’t among the top three brands in the smartphone market, and it has had some troubles with pushing new software updates to users so as to offer them the latest features and capabilities, but most of Xperia owners are known to be loyal fans, as XperiaBlog says.

Should the survey indeed reflect the actual state of facts, it remains to be seen whether Sony will manage to change things in its favor moving forth, and determine its users to remain on Xperia devices longer than other companies out there do.

The company has launched some highly appealing flagship phones over the past 12 months or so, and the latest of them, Xperia Z2, should land on shelves later this month with top-of-the-line capabilities inside, capable of attracting a lot of users, that’s for sure.

However, this is not the case only with Sony’s new devices, as Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is also highly appealing, the same as HTC’s unannounced All New HTC One is. Competition will be fierce, yet things have been so ever since Android has started to dominate the market, so there’s nothing new here.
