Australian mobile phone carrier Telstra is reportedly gearing up for the release of a new Sony smartphone on its airwaves, namely the Xperia P.

Unveiled earlier this year in the new Xperia lineup from Sony, the smartphone packs mid- to high-end features and capabilities.

It sports a large 4-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a qHD resolution (960 × 540), along with a dual-core application processor clocked at 1GHz and an 8-megapixel photo snapper. The smartphone runs under Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

According to Ausdroid, Xperia P is set to land on Telstra’s network as soon as June 26th is here, and it will be offered for free on the $49 AUS Freedom Connect cap over 24 months.

No other wireless carrier in the country appears to have plans to add the device to its lineup for the time being.

still with 2.3 and it's not even released yet ?!? what are they thinking -- there might be enough dipsticks and duped desperados in telstraland to sell this, but it doesn't help Sony' s bottom line when they aren't offering a current OS, let alone quadcore processing, or competing on features with the likes of Apple or Samsung. this is yet another pointless release, and little wonder other carriers aren't bothering with it.
