Although Sony Xperia ion was announced more than five months ago at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the smartphone has yet to make its debut on the market.

The handset is expected to arrive on AT&T’s airwaves in the following weeks, though no details on the phone’s availability and pricing options have been leaked for the moment.

Even though most AT&T customers probably already forgot that Xperia ion even exists, it looks like the smartphone might be released in the States after all.

There’s a Google ad that has been prematurely released on the Internet, which confirmed the Sony Xperia ion is coming exclusively to AT&T in June.

There are no other details concerning the smartphone’s price or exact release date, but the fact that Google has already kicked off an advertisement campaign for the Xperia ion indicates that the device is indeed making its way to shelves.

Given the fact that we do not know for sure what Sony’s plans for Xperia ion are, the information needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Unfortunately, just like the rest of Xperia NXT devices, Xperia ion comes with the same Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

However, Sony already confirmed that an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for Xperia ion would be available in Q2 2012, though no exact release date has been unveiled yet.

The Xperia ion is the US variant of the Xperia S, but slightly improved. The former comes with a large 4.55-inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720 x 1280 pixels) resolution, which is based on Sony Mobile Bravia Engine technology.

Hardware-wise, Xperia ion is equipped with a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, an Adreno 220, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 32 GB via microSD card.
