Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile has been recently rumored to plan the release of a new Android-based handset in its homeland market, in the form of Xperia A2, and some more info on the device is now available.

According to a leaked document that appeared online over at XperiaBlog, the upcoming handset will not feature support for 4K video recording, despite the fact that it is expected to arrive on shelves as the smaller flavor of Xperia Z2.

The smartphone is reportedly set to make an appearance in Japan on the network of wireless carrier NTT DOCOMO and should prove similar to last year’s Xperia Z1 f.

For those out of the loop, we should note that this phone was released as the smaller version of Xperia Z1, and that it landed on shelves internationally as the Xperia Z1 Compact.

Thus, the phone was believed right from the beginning to be launched as the smaller Xperia Z2 variant, packing a 4.3-inch display and the same specs as the flagship phone.

However, it appears that this might not be the case, and that the new device will be released only as a new variant of the Xperia Z1 Compact, without some features and capabilities that Xperia Z2 was released with.

Among these, we can count the aforementioned support for 4K video recording, which suggests that it might feature a different chipset when compared to the new flagship smartphone from Sony, XperiaBlog notes.

The aforementioned leaked document compared the camera capabilities of Xperia Z2 (SO-03F), Xperia A2 (SO-04F), and Xperia Z2 Tablet (SO-05F).

Apparently, unlike the existing high-end smartphone, the handset might lack some other camera capabilities, though it remains to be seen whether this will indeed pan out in the end.

No confirmation on the phone being named Xperia A2 has emerged either, though the fact that it will pack capabilities different from Xperia Z2 supposedly explains why Sony might actually go for a different name with it.

As mentioned above, the new device is expected to make an official appearance in Japan soon at NTT DOCOMO, yet no specific info on when that might happen has been provided.

However, the carrier might unveil its entire summer lineup in May or early June, and this phone could be included there as well, which means that it might not be that long before it becomes official. Keep an eye on this space for updates on the matter.
