17% of PS4 owners didn't even have a last-generation console, according to Sony

Sony has revealed a rather interesting analysis that shows that Xbox 360 or Wii owners are currently upgrading to the PlayStation 4, meaning the company can certainly succeed with upcoming remakes like The Last of Us Remastered.

The PS4 came out last November alongside rival Xbox One, and quite a lot of hardcore gamers went with Sony's console, after being deterred by Microsoft's undecided politics concerning used games, always online requirements, and more.

However, not all PS4 owners have upgraded from a PS3, at least according to Sony's Scott Rohde, who talked with CVG.

Apparently, a large portion of PS4 owners either didn't own a previous console altogether or had an Xbox 360 or Wii, making their shift even bigger.

"Everyone in this industry always tracks that kind of stuff. I can give you some more detail. It's always fascinating to look at all this data. So, two of the things I can talk about - because they're true, and this comes from [industry tracking firm Nielsen Ratings]: 17 per cent of PS4 owners did not own a last-gen console. That in itself is a pretty shocking number," he said.

"31 per cent of PS4 owners did not own a PS3, but they did own either a 360 or Wii. Now, those are some pretty amazing numbers. And that's why, again, I think we're doing things like bringing the Last of Us to PS4, because there's a huge percentage of those people who never got to play it and that's a shame."

This means that a market for remastered games from the last generation certainly exists and plenty of PS4 owners are looking forward to things like The Last of Us Remastered or Grand Theft Auto 5.

"With the data that gave you, and because The Last of Us is a relatively recent release, and because it was so incredibly popular and well received, it absolutely made sense for that title. It's not as if we're going into our back catalogue and doing every single thing."

"It's just a case-by-case decision. You're seeing it from everyone - you're seeing GTA V, you're seeing all these big titles come over because it makes sense."

These figures are certainly intriguing and it's going to be interesting to see how Sony will serve the PS4 users who have missed out on different exclusive games or titles from the last generation because they didn't have a console or a PS3.
