PS Vita owners that want to play PSP games must buy them from the PS Store

Sony has revealed that it won’t be offering the UMD Passport service to PlayStation Vita owners in the U.S., meaning those who already bought games for the older PSP won’t be able to play them on the Vita.

The PSP, while not that huge of a success, still sold tens of millions of units, as well as plenty of games, most of them found on UMD discs.

As such, Sony offered new Vita owners in Japan a special service called UMD Passport, which allowed them to register UMD games to their PSN account, and then, for a small fee, play them on the Vita.

In the U.S., sadly, this isn’t going to happen, as Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed to Kotaku that such a service wouldn’t be offered. A reason for such a decision has yet to be shared, but it’s pretty safe to say that the company won’t change its mind anytime soon.

As of yet, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe hasn’t talked about an UMD Passport program for that region, so it seems that only Japanese Vita owners can play older PSP titles without having to buy them again from the PlayStation Store.
