The PlayStation 3 might get a new price cut later this year, at least according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe UK boss Ray Maguire.

Current home consoles are still selling quite a lot of units, with the Xbox 360 growing constantly despite the economic downturn.

As you can imagine, Sony wants to make its PlayStation 3 even more competitive, and Sony's Ray Maguire admits that the pricing strategy hasn't really helped the device remain in close competition with its rivals, the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

"PS3 has taken longer than PS2 to establish itself simply because of the cost of the product," he told the latest issue of OPM UK (via CVG). "It's been a challenge for us to get the costs down over the years. The retail price has been more than we would have liked. Hopefully the price might still come down."

The console was launched with a very prohibitive $599 price tag, making it a very tough sell until the device received a price cut to $250.

Since then, the Japanese console has been selling a lot of units all over the world, and managed to catch up to its closest rival, the Xbox 360.

Maguire is still confident that the PS3 will become even more competitive, as the device is getting new features left and right through firmware updates, including the likes of 3D Blu-ray playback and new, more enhanced services like PlayStation Home.

All these features, which are just now being used to their full capacity, guarantees that the console will continue to stay relevant and sell for quite some time now, according to the Sony man.

"It gets adopted, then it gets redeveloped, so you keep on upgrading everything as you go along. I think that's part of its success and the longevity of it. "I did think we were taking a big risk in PS3 by making it so heavy featured. As it turned out, I now think it was a stroke of genius, because it's given PS3 the ability to go on year after year."

Are you looking forward to a price cut for the PlayStation 3 or is the device still a great purchase at $250?
