It is a secret to no one that the desktop computer market has lost considerable ground to the portable computer market, as notebooks and ultraportable PCs tend to sell faster and in larger numbers than desktop PCs. However, there's still hope, PC manufacturers seem to believe, as new form factors are bound to revive this segment. On that note, Sony announced today the debut of its new all-in-one VAIO desktop series, the VAIO J, which is said to be touch-enabled and an affordable multimedia machine.

“The J Series changes the way consumers interact with their PC enabling them to tap, drag, zoom, rotate and engage with their content and entertainment like never before,” said Mike Lucas, senior vice president of the VAIO business at Sony. “And with its attractive price point, this cutting-edge technology will reach a whole new audience.”

The new series is comparable with the company's L-series, as it sports a full-HD 1920 x 1080 widescreen panel, measuring 21.5-inch. This only adds up to the support for Blu-ray discs, which should indicate the multimedia capabilities of this powerful computer system. Aside from that, the J-series has been built to fit some of the latest components on the market, including the likes of Intel's Core i7-620M CPU with speeds of up to 2.66GHz.

Additional features of the new J-series include the support for up to 8GB of RAM, an NVIDIA discrete graphics chip with up to 512 vRAM, a 7200RPM, 500 GB hard drive and the now-popular Windows 7 operating system. As an additional feature, the J-series has also been packed with Sony's Media Gallery application with support for touch.

The J-series is bound to become available next month for a starting price point of “just” US$900, a good US$400 cheaper than the L-series, which sports a 24-inch display.
