Sony Updates PSP Firmware to 3.93

- PS3 update set to follow in April

By: Andrei Dumitrescu, Games Editor

Sony is pretty busy these days with launching new firmware for its products. Last week, the maker of the PlayStation 3 has released update 3.17 for the firmware of its next-gen console, stating only that "the operating stability
of some online PS3 titles has been improved." And now, the PSP is getting firmware version 3.93, that expands support for PlayStation Network titles and adds the support required by the users of the Radio feature to listen to more than 20 new stations.

The motives behind the move were revealed by John Koller, who is the Senior Marketing Manager for Sony PSP, when he said that: "More than 50 percent of PSP users listen to music on their system "so we think a lot of you will enjoy this free, new expansion of their music library."

While users appreciate the clear and continued support that Sony is offering for its products, it seems a bit counterproductive to release firmware updates without making very clear what improvements the user should expect. A situation where Sony is working hard, but its releases are not appreciated to the fullest extent because of lack of info, is foreseeable.

Sony exec John Hight, speaking to Gamasutra, has revealed that Sony is preparing a new major update for the PlayStation 3, this time focusing on the usability elements that users requested when talking to Sony. He stated: "We give a lot of feedback based on how our customers are reacting to things, and I think you will see a pretty big change in the PlayStation Network in the early part of April, where we roll out some new interface stuff largely based on customer feedback."

So, PS3 users, expect a firmware update in April that will cut down on the number of clicks required to do certain actions and will offer much easier access to all the content that's available on the PS3.
