Sony is continuing its push for wider adoption for three dimensional gaming with the latest highlight being the unveiling of a futuristic looking personal display headset that can be used to get a more personal experience than until now, using the PlayStation 3 and the Bravia line of television sets.
The new headset, which can be seen in the attached image, has two separate displays, one for each eye, independently delivering images to the gamer, and it integrates closed headphones that enhance the effect.
Sony has revealed no actual specifications for its
3D headset but has stated that the visuals as “top notch” and that the sound is “powerful.”
Hiroshi Yoshioka, who is an executive deputy president at Sony, has presented the new device at CES and, while not saying that it is exclusively aimed at gamers, has suggested as much by talking about how he had been using it to play Gran Turismo 5, adding, “Nobody – not even my wife – interrupt me, so I could get the highest score.”
Sony has also said that the device is still in the development stage, with no price announced and no launch date set, but if it is gaming dedicate, more information about it could be offered at the E3 trade show.
It could be that the 3D capable headset is more a proof of concept than something gamers will actually be using, designed to test a set of technologies that could arrive in the near future as part of other devices.
Sony is very serious about delivering three dimensional based gaming experiences and is including it in all its big releases.
The much delayed Gran Turismo 5 offered a superior gaming experience in 3D and upcoming
Killzone 3, the first person shooter PS3 exclusive, has long been advertised as supporting both three dimensional gaming and the Move motion tracking system.
