New competitor for iTunes

A new avalanche of rumors sustain that Sony prepares a movie download service that would compete with Apple's iTunes which is one of the most popular platforms at this time. Although the speculations were not entirely confirmed, the Sony officials said that company is interested in this market but avoided to mention if they really plan to produce a video platform. According to Forbes, Sony is currently seeking for new areas to expand its offering and this side of the market can represent the best domain to become popular.

"Music and video downloading has been available through networks, and we are looking into the area as a possible business," said Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida for Forbes.

This is not the first time when Sony is involved into some revolutionary plans that would represent a real threat for the online companies but in the end they prove to be only some disappointing technology. The best example is represented by eyeVio, an online video sharing platform that was described as a potential YouTube killer even from the moment when it was first announced. Everybody was waiting for the big launch of eyeVio. But when the product was officially rolled out, Sony announced that it is only a beta and will remain available for the Japanese users.

Obviously, YouTube remained the leader of the category and, since it doesn't feel any threat, it continues to be the king of the video sharing technologies. But Sony's eyeVio can always represent a competitor for Google's video service if the parent company decides to invest considerable amounts of money and bring exclusive content on the page. However, it can be extremely difficult to attract users to the page since most of them are interested in the homemade clips made by other members of the video sharing service.
