Might jump on the tablet PC bandwagon

It would seem that teasing has become a popular sport amongst PC manufacturers, as the majority of them are releasing bits of information about a new product that they plan on releasing in the near future. Such is the case with Japan's Sony, which has just recently updated its webpage with a teaser of a “VAIO New Ultra Mobile” device, slated to be announced soon. Unfortunately, as is the case with such premature announcements, nothing specific has been revealed, so it's pretty much a guessing game until the company comes out in the open.

After heading over to Sony's Japanese Sonystyle website, you might notice a black banner featuring a symbol that looks similar to that of a standard paperclip. In addition, the banner also notes that a new VAIO ultra mobile will come soon, which is the only indication that Sony plans to update its product portfolio with a new solution addressing the ultra mobile segment.

If we are to speculate, the company could be on the verge of entering the tablet market, especially since we are seeing a number of companies expressing their direct intention to compete with the Cupertino, California-based Apple and its now famous iPad tablet. As we don't have any specific details on the hardware, design or specifications of Sony's upcoming device, you should take this with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, we are waiting with anticipation for the formal release of the teased ultra mobile product.

It is, however, interesting to note that Sony's current lineup includes one VAIO ultra mobile PC, namely the P-series launched back at CES 2009. This computer has been received with mixed feelings, but it came as one of Sony's breakthrough products, becoming the world's lightest 8-inch notebook. Being powered by Intel's Atom processors, many have compared the device with popular netbook solutions, despite Sony's intention of placing it in a totally different category.
