As all of you probably know, HD video is just going mainstream as we speak, but it will surely become THE format of choice in just a couple of years time. And since the best thing about video (or any kind of media content, for that matter) is that it can be edited, Sony has decided to take an early start in this field, and launched a dedicated system aimed especially at those users who want to fiddle with their HD video clips, namely the Vaio VGC-RM1.

And what a powerhouse of a system this is. First of all, the VAIO VGC-RM1 editing system features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, capable of undertaking CPU-intensive tasks such as high definition video editing, sound mixing and audio dubbing. The storage capability is quite impressive as well, since the system sports 4 SATA HDDs with a total capacity of 1 TB, enough to let you edit away all the HD content you might think of. Moreover, the VAIO VGC-RM1 comes with 2 GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory, as well as with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT graphics card with 527 MB of total available video RAM memory. And of course, last but not least, the system sports a Blu-ray writer (what did you expect, it comes from Sony, doesn't it?).

Another very interesting fact about this system is that it has been designed for HD video editors who demand flexibility and crave a cool, quiet working environment. That is why the VGC-RM1system consists of two separate units, a slim and black desktop unit with a brushed aluminum form factor and a larger desk-side unit which also features a brushed aluminum panel as well as an air-vent design for improved airflow.

Here are the most important features and specifications the Vaio VGC-RM1 has to offer:

- dimensions: main unit: 42.92 cm x 14 cm x 43.9 cm; access unit: 42.92 cm x 6.35 cm x 28.9 cm; - weight: main unit: 15.96 kilos; access unit: 6.48 kilos; - storage capacity: 1 TB (4 x 250 GB SATA HDDs, 7200 RPM); - processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.40GHz, 1066MHz Bus Speed, 4MB Advanced Smart Cache; - memory: 2 GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory, 667MHz; - video: NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT graphics card, 527 MB of total video RAM memory; - audio: Sony Sound Reality audio enhancer; - networking: 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T adapter, RJ11 modem; - optical drives: Blu-ray drive, supports BD-R DL/BD-RE/DVD?R, DL/DVD?RW/DVD-RAM; - USB ports: 12(!) x USB 2.0 ports.

This uber hi-tech system also comes with its own keyboard and specialized mouse, as well as an USB Jog Dial device for precise control while shuttling video. As expected, the VAIO VGC-RM1 is Vista-compatible, and is available for around 3,500 US dollars, which is quite a hefty price tag, but the system does offer some pretty good value for your money, especially if you're into video editing.
