Sony really took the world by storm when it launched the XEL-1 OLED-only HDTV set back in October 2007, as it offered a bit of a preview regarding the future of television. However, it looks like the Japanese company has not slowed down the research pace, since it has showcased some even more "Sci-Fi" displays at the Display 2008 show, which is taking place these days in Tokyo.

First of all, as Impress Japan informs us, Sony presented a completely new, more slender flavor of the XEL-1, fitted with an even thinner panel. Thus, while the model already available on the market features a 1.4-mm panel, the new XEL-1 will be equipped with a 0.3-mm version that will lead to somewhat of a decrease of the TVs overall thickness.

What's really interesting to mention here is that despite of the very small size, the panel delivers pretty much the same version as the other version, namely 960x540 pixels. This achievement has been made possible due to the introduction of a new technology, which sports an improved TFT substrate and less glass support.

However, in order to tickle our technological sense even further, Sony has also displayed an even thinner prototype, which has a thickness of just 0.2 mm. This 3.5-inch panel is also based on OLED technology, but delivers a smaller resolution, of just 320 x 220 dots.

All in all, Sony seems to be going thin all-the-way. It's already quite clear that ultra-thin OLED displays represent the future of high-definition television, and it's quite likely that in just a few years' time, they'll hit a mainstream-level price point and become a real threat even to LCDs and plasmas. Unfortunately, only time will tell just how quick that moment will arrive.
