After the NPD Group revealed the sales numbers for hardware in the United States during the month of February video game hardware maker and publisher Sony has issued a statement which talks about the exceptions initial sales of the PlayStation Vita handheld.

Patrick Seybold, who is the corporate communications boss working at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, stated, “After months of anticipation, the U.S. launch of PlayStation Vita saw overwhelming enthusiasm amongst gamers, resulting in exceptional hardware, software and peripheral sales.”

Despite the solid results that the PlayStation Vita managed to deliver on the United States market the company refused to make public the actual sales numbers and has only talked about the previously released figure of 1.2 million units sold all over the world since launch.

Seybold added, “Customer satisfaction rates are very high and momentum will continue as gamers get their hands on a deep lineup of blockbuster titles that take advantage of PS Vita’s unique features, including cross-platform play with the PlayStation 3.”

The NPD Group has not offered any numbers for Vita sales either but the tracking firm has said that it has noticed a considerable uptick in hardware sales when the device was launched on February 22.

The new handheld from Sony has performed worse than expected in Japan, where it has been out since late 2011,and current sales orbit around the 10,000 units per week mark but Sony has made it clear that it expects to see much better results on Western markets.

The company also plans to deliver more video games for the handheld in the coming months while also pushing third parties to bring their big titles to the Vita.

Based on early performers analysts also believe that Sony will announce a price cut for the handheld during the summer in order to boost hardware sales.
