Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the newly launched PlayStation Vita handheld has managed to sell more than 1.2 million units all over the world, as shown by internal figures from the company that track sales until the end of February.

The company has not broken down sales by territory so it’s not clear whether the recent North American and European launch of the Vita has been more successful than the Japanese one, which took place in late December.

Sony has also revealed that it has managed to sell more than 2 million video games for the Vita, including physical sales and titles bought and downloaded from the PlayStation Network.

The official announcement did not mention which games were the best sellers, although charts show that Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football have so far performed very well.

Andrew House, who is both the president and group chief executive officer at Sony Computer Entertainment, stated, “PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling.”

He added, “The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

“To sustain momentum, we’re working closely with 3rd party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe.”

Sony also mentions that it has another 70 video games in development for the PlayStation Vita and that it will continue to add features to the device via firmware updates.

Initial sales of the device have been lower than analysts expected and a number of industry watchers have suggested that the Vita would benefit from a price cut.
