Despite expectations that Sony might offer information about the next generation of home consoles it is working on before the end of the year, the hardware maker has revealed that it still has long-term plans for the PlayStation 3, which will be soon used to promote the Vita handheld.

John Koller, who is the vice president in charge of hardware and marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, has told IGN that, “There’s a lot of research showing that the PS3 consumer spends the most time of any consumer on the console. The PS3 consumer also spends a lot. They spend a lot of time and they spend a lot of money.”

The executive also talked about how the PS3 can be used by Sony in order to boost the sales numbers of the Vita, adding, “We try to offer unique experiences between the two platforms. Usually, we’re successful in that.”

Sony has recently revealed that it had content already lined up for the next three years for the PlayStation 3 and that a number of titles are set to use the new Remote Play feature of the Vita, often described as being superior to the touchscreen-enabled control options of the upcoming Wii U from Nintendo.

Sony has recently launched a new version of the PS3, which is even smaller than the Slim and more energy-efficient, and it seems that the company is getting ready to deliver a number of bundles that promote the new hardware.

The Wii U will be launched starting with November 18 in North America and European gamers will get it on November 30, while those who play in Japan will have to wait another eight days.

Neither Microsoft nor Sony have announced official plans for the next generation of home consoles, but industry watchers expect information to appear at E3 2012.
