A Sony representative has said that the video game division of the company is not working on a next-generation console in the PlayStation 4, but that it is currently focusing all its efforts on the creation, manufacture and launch of the NGP, the handheld that the gaming world often refers to as the PlayStation Portable 2.

The financial results that Sony talked about last week provided a platform for the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Masuro Mato to talk about the future of the company, saying that it was already spending money on creating a “future platform” and that more Research and Development funds are linked to the project next year.

But Sony has refuted all speculation about the possibility of a PlayStation 4 home gaming console and says that the focus remains squarely on the NGP, which is expected to get a big show at the E3 trade show and will be launched before the end of the year.

Sony has long insisted that the life cycle of the currently available PlayStation 3 is set at ten years, which means that there are more than 4 years to go before another home platform from the company should be launched.

Sony is surely working on a new device, but the company will probably only aim to show off its new device close to launch date, probably at some point during 2014 or 2015.

Microsoft has also hinted that it is working on a new home console and is hiring hardware engineers that will decide its final capacity.

Nintendo is also widely thought to be working on a Nintendo Wii 2 and the company is expected to talk about it extensively at the E3 trade show.

The new device is set to offer the same computing power as current rivals from Sony and Microsoft and rumors are saying that it will be offering a new type of controller that incorporates a touch screen.
