Mobile phone carrier AT&T is reportedly gearing up for the release of a new tablet PC on its airwaves, namely the Sony S2, which has just received the necessary approvals from the Federal Communications Commission.

Sporting the model number Sony SGPT211US, the dual-screen tablet PC has just made an appearance at the FCC with support for AT&T's 3G/UMTS bands.

The Sony S2 slate should arrive on the market with support for the wireless carrier's 850MHz and 1900MHz 3G bands, though there is no certainty that it would indeed hit shelves at this wireless carrier.

However, the device that passed through FCC testing is a model supposedly headed for the United States market, although Sony has in store other models as well, including devices set to land in Canada and Japan.

The Sony S2 tablet that passed through FCC packed an Ericsson F5521gw cellular module, which suggests that it would be capable of providing 21Mbps HSPA+ speeds.

At the same time, the prototype device is said to pack a removable 3080mAh lithium-ion battery inside, suggesting that it would be able to offer extended usage time.

The tablet PC is set to hit shelves with a dual-screen form factor, and it would certainly require a lot of power, which the said battery should provide.

2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n WiFi connectivity capabilities should be included with the new device as well, along with Bluetooth capabilities, and, most probably, a built-in GPS receiver as well.

The tablet PC should run under Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, which would mean support for a wide range of Google Mobile Services, including Search, Maps, YouTube, or Gmail, as well as for applications available for download via the Android Market.

For the time being, however, nothing was confirmed on the possible landing of Sony's S2 tablet PC on shelves at AT&T. Stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
