Only basic functions, but splash-resistant

Remote controls are among the most useful devices ever developed, as they allow users to indulge in their laziness and control their every device while relaxing in the bed, on the sofa or wherever. However, on occasions, said lazy users also have the habit of spilling certain beverages onto the remotes, thus rendering them useless, and this is the reason why the people over at Sony have just announced the release of their PZ1 series of waterproof remote controls, which can get wet without actually losing any of their "controlling" power.

Although the idea is quite an attractive one, the end result is well...average at best. The designers at Sony went for a very basic, entry-level design, and although the devices in this series are quite useful and user-friendly (they sport extra-large buttons, which means that they can even be used in poorer lighting conditions), the number of control options they provide is very limited, as the users can only control analog or digital channels with them.

The new series of remotes includes 3 models: the PZ1FD, the PZ1 SD and the PZ1D. The functions carried out by these three devices are quite similar, the most significant differences being in the design area. Thus, the PZ1FD is the largest of the series, measuring around 127 mm x 96 mm x 17mm, at an overall weight of around 148 grams. The second model, the PZ1 SD has a "candybar" design, and is a lot thinner, measuring around 51 mm x 141 mm x 25mm, at around 103 grams. The last model, the PZ1D, measures around 63 mm x 149 mm 30mm, at a weight of around 128 grams, and, compared to the other models, has smoother, more rounded edges.

The waterproof remotes from Sony's PZ1 series are available for now solely in Japan for the equivalent of around 22 US dollars, which is actually a pretty fair price to pay for these basic, yet relatively useful devices.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
