As expected, Sony Mobile has just released the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Xperia P. The smartphone was launched back in May with Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform out of the box, but Sony promised an upgrade would be available at some point in Q3 2012.

Sony has been very busy in the last 2-3 month, as the company had to deliver Android 4.0 ICS updates for its 2011 Xperia smartphones.

Unfortunately, the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for some of these models didn’t make the phone run faster and smoother, on the contrary.

Many 2011 Xperia owners still complain that their phones are now acting weird and some of the features are not working at all.

Next in line to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade was Sony Xperia S. The smartphone got the update two months ago and fortunately everything worked smoothly.

Today, the Japanese company announced the immediate availability of the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Xperia P.

Sony Xperia P is a mid-range smartphone powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1 GHz. This is one of the first Sony handsets to come packed with ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor U8500 chipset.

Aside from bringing the Xperia P’s firmware to Android 4.0.4 ICS, the update also adds the following changes:

- New ways to experience your media with new media applications – “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies;” - Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption); - Lock screen with improved functionality; - Resizable widgets for improved personalization; - Improved control of your mobile data consumption; - Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications.

Keep in mind that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for Xperia P may only be available via PC Companion or Bridge for Mac in some markets.
