Sony Online Entertainment, the division of the popular company which deals with MMOs and online experiences, has announced that its fan-oriented event is now known as SOE Live and will take place between October 18 and 21 of this year in Las Vegas.

The event was previously known as the Fan Fair and Sony says that the new change was designed to better reflect the diversity of the games that the company is in charge of.

Laura Naviaux, a spokesperson for Sony Online Entertainment, has stated, “The ‘SOE Live’ name change represents a deeper meaning behind our annual event.

“As our game portfolio continues to expand, we wanted to better represent our diverse player base and games, including the newest additions to the SOE family, with DC Universe Online, Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, and the highly anticipated PlanetSide 2.”

She added, “Previous event attendees can rest assured that we are not removing any of our established activities in order to accommodate the new players; rather, they can expect even more to make this the ultimate SOE fan experience.”

SOE says that it has plans for a number of social events that allow players to get to know each other outside of the MMO space and that it will also organize development panel discussions and exclusive announcements.

Tournaments are also organized with exclusive prizes, both in the used games and in the real world.

Sony Online Entertainment has been recently announcing that its biggest titles, from EverQuest to Vanguard, are moving to the free-to-play business model in order to attract more players and generate more revenue.

The company is also currently working on Planetside 2, an MMO title that focuses on shooter and territory domination mechanics, and plans to launch it on the PC, probably during 2012.
