Earlier this week, Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile has released its Xperia Z1 Compact smartphone in various markets across Europe, and the company has also decided to make the source code for the device available for download.

Those interested in downloading the kernel code for the new mobile phone will have to head over to this page on Sony Mobile’s developer website.

The source code can be downloaded for free, and is based on software version 14.2.A.1.114. The file weighs 347MB.

While end users won’t be able to do too much with the code, developers interested in coming up with custom ROMs for the smartphone will certainly welcome its availability.

With the handset already up for grabs in various markets out there, it should not be too long before unofficial software for it is also released, so stay tuned.
