Sony Mobile has decided to make yet another move that would help developers come up with applications and custom ROMs designed for its Xperia devices much easier than before, by making the kernel sources of these devices available via GitHub.

Apparently, this is one thing that many developers have been long asking for, and the Japanese mobile phone maker has finally decided to comply with their request.

“Putting the Sony kernel sources on GitHub is made solely for the purpose of making things easier for open source developers working with custom ROMs and kernels,” the company notes in a blog post.

Of course, the source code archives remain available through the Sony Developer World as well, yet the vendor claims that the move to GitHub will come with a great deal of advantages for developers.

“Not least by the fact that it will now be easy to integrate, track and review any changes. It will literally save you hours of work, compared to before when you manually had to check for differences,” the company notes.

Developers interested in grabbing the kernel sources for Xperia handsets via GitHub will need to head over to the SonyXperiaDev GitHub for that.

Next, they will simply need to select the build they are interested in and will instantly access all of the individual commits coming either from the chipset manufacturer or from Sony itself.

Sony has long said that it would offer support for the developers of custom ROMs for its devices, and the new move clearly proves that it is committed to that.
