One of the great features that Sony’s Xperia Z smartphones have been released with is water-proof capabilities, and it seems that the handset vendor is determined to push them to the front once again.

Thus, the company has announced the availability of a series of applications meant to take full advantage of this, called Sony Underwater Apps.

As Sony notes in the promo page available for these new mobile apps in the Google Play store, they were designed so as to provide users with new, fun ways to enjoy their devices.

“Our engineers made phones work underwater. Our artists make them fun under water. Created for the waterproof Sony Xperia Z1s, this suite of apps gives you things to do with a waterproof phone—other than drop it in the toliet. Download the apps. Submerge your phone in water. And see what happens,” the company notes.

Apparently, the Xperia handsets are capable of detecting when they are under water, courtesy of a simple trick. Said devices will produce a test tone that humans cannot hear and will record the produced sound via its microphones.

Given that sound waves move differently in water than they do in air, the spectrograms generated by the recorded sound will allow the smartphone to determine whether it is submerged or not.

Sony has released no less than six applications that will work on devices when under water, though it appears that only the owners of T-Mobile’s Xperia Z1s and Xperia Z devices can enjoy them at the moment.

All of said applications are now available for download via the Google Play Store, for said devices, though chances are that the APKs will emerge online in the not-too-distant future, and that owners of other Xperia smartphones out there will also get the chance to try them out, as XperiaBlog notes.

The first app on the list is Goldie, which allows users to save a cute fish by submerging it in water. The second one is Photo Lab, which enables you to “process photos” using the “old method,” which is none other than a dark room.

The third app in the series is Plantimal, which enables users to grow a mutant creature by watering it daily. Next, there’s Rainy-oke, designed for those who like to sing in the rain, ensuring that they do not forget the lyrics.

With Sink Sunk, users will be able to pilot their own submarine, while Tiny Umbrella makes sure that you stay dry, as long as you hold it above your head, of course.

As you can see, these apps are designed for leisure, though they will certainly prove appealing for many users out there.
