Friday, news that hackers have succeeded to release a modified firmware for the PSP has caused a lot of commotion among gamers all around the world. This new firmware allowed users to run non-Sony software on the PSP, including games, movies or applications developed by hackers.

In addition, PSP owners
were able to run emulators for other consoles. It didn't take long for Sony to react and the Japanese site already offers the 2.1 update which doesn't have any new feature or bug fixes. Its only purpose is to prevent the hacked firmware from being installed.

Sony warned that currently the firmware update is aimed only at the PSP consoles sold in Japan and didn't mention the release dates for the US and Europe.

Since the 2.1 update doesn't offer any other feature, it's hard to believe that users will install it, although Sony has asked for their cooperation.

The Sony PSP console was launched at the beginning of last month in Europe, after it had been introduced in Japan and the US.
