Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile is gearing up for the release of a new software update for the Xperia Z2 handset, and the company has already received certification for it.

The new firmware release has been spotted at the PTCRB as version 17.1.1.A.0.438, but no specific info on what it will have to offer has been provided as of now, as XperiaBlog notes.

Details on when the update might start arriving on handsets haven’t been announced either, though chances are that Sony will kick off the rollout sooner rather than later.

Until more on this is provided, however, Xperia Z2 users might want to know that CyanogenMod nightly builds are now available for the handset.

Based on the Android 4.4.3 KitKat operating system, the first such build can be found on CyanogenMod’s download website. Just look for the codenamed Sirius to grab it.

However, before proceeding, users should know that the installation of this ROM requires an unlocked bootloader and a rooted device.

The build is not fully stable, and XperiaBlog reports that it still sports issues with the camera, as well as some touchscreen responsiveness problems. However, new CM 11 nightly releases should arrive soon for the handset, and these issues might be resolved in no time.
