Sony is releasing its financial results for the first three months of its current fiscal year, and the company is ready to reveal that its PlayStation line of home consoles has managed to deliver 3.5 million units to gamers all over the world.

The hardware maker also says that it has managed to move 0.75 million units of the Vita and the normal PlayStation to users, and that overall video games sales have gone over the 85 million mark.

Hardware sales are a little lower than for the fourth quarter of last fiscal year, but Sony has chosen not to say exactly how many PlayStation 4s it has sold, probably because it is aiming to make a huge announcement once the next-gen console passes the 10 million mark.

The trend has been for the PS4 to hold steady in terms of overall sales, while the PS3 has seen a significant and steady decline in its own numbers.

Unofficial sources are saying that the life time total for PlayStation 4 sales is now close to 9.5 million units.

Sony also mentions that it has recorded an operating income of 4.3 billion Yen, which is about 43 million dollars (32 million Euro), during the first quarter of the fiscal year, which covers the period from April to June.

This is a much better performance than for the same period in 2013, when the company posted a big loss.

The official report says that the cause of the improved sales is linked to the launch of the PlayStation 4, and that the PS3 has been underperforming when compared to initial expectations.

The company aims to continue posting a profit for the rest of the year and is expecting to see improved hardware sales as more exclusive titles are delivered to gamers.

The next-gen device will also become more attractive with the launch of the new PlayStation Now service, which allows players to experience titles via streaming and is currently offered as a beta in both the United States and Canada.

Sony might also be preparing to reveal a price cut for the Vita in order to make it more attractive to potential buyers.

At the moment, the PS4 is performing better than the Xbox One from Microsoft, but the situation could be reversed later in the year as both companies announce new promotions and battle to secure exclusive games and services.
