Fergal Gara, the leading executive of the United Kingdom division of Sony, says that the launch of the PlayStation 4 shows that digital sales and traditional retail need to coexist in order to make the device a success in the long term.

The statement comes after the company was criticized for the big prices that were first shown on the PS Store, which were higher than on the similar solution for the Xbox One for multiplatform releases.

Gara tells Eurogamer that, “Buying DLC and add-ons is already a significant business. So I think we'll find the right level that allows retail to coexist, selling discs and giving a great high street presence for our games, but also the digital option to coexist alongside it.”

The PlayStation 4 is now available in both the United States and in Europe, and Sony has promised that it will evaluate its digital pricing strategy in the coming weeks.
