Great news for all the PS3 fans: the console's firmware version 4.00 announced some days ago went official and is available for free download.

The main update in this firmware release is the support for Sony's newest PS product, the PS Vita. Installing firmware 4.00 on your PlayStation 3 will allow you to connect it with the PS Vita using an USB cable.

Having the two gaming gadgets connected will allow you to transfer data between them: you can move pictures, movies, games, and music, or you can backup generic or game-specific data from your Vita.

Even more, you'll be able to update the PS Vita using the Internet connection of the PS3. Basically, the PlayStation 3 will become a base system for operations, integrating the new PS Vita and allowing you to experience all the combined features of the two.

As for the updates for the PlayStation, they include upscaling features for Blu-ray media, new languages and some update-related enhancements for PlayStationPlus members. You can now download the PlayStation 3 firmware 4.00 from Softpedia, safe and for free, as always.
