Video game developer Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it plans to make its MMO Vanguard: Saga of Heroes free-to-play at some point during the summer.

The move comes five years after the official launch of the game and the development team says that it will deliver more updates and events of the MMO after the free-to-play transition is made.

Sony has managed to see better-than-expected results from both EverQuest titles, which have also made the move to free-to-play.

Vanguard has a lower player base than those titles and failed to find a clear niche for itself since launching five years ago.

A number of developers associated with Vanguard, including Creative Director Salim grant, Technical Director Todd Schmidt and Development Director Andy Sites, are being brought back to Vanguard in order to help with the transition and with subsequent events.

Sony Online Entertainment is currently working on Planetside 2, a shooter-focused MMO that will also use the free-to-play model.
