Japanese mobile phone maker Sony might not be selling too many smartphones when compared to other handset vendors out there, but the company does enjoy great traction in some markets out there, and India appears to be one of them.

According to a recent report from IDC, Sony has already managed to overtake Apple as the second largest smartphone brand in this country.

Apparently, the company’s mid-range devices have helped it gain market share and increase its value among end-users in the country.

“Some of the top selling models for Sony are Xperia M Dual and Xperia C priced in this bracket, which is one of the fastest growing segments in the Indian smartphone market,” IDC India senior market analyst Manasi Yadav said, a recent article on technodify reads.

Apparently, Sony has seen an increase in value due to the removal of Apple’s iPhone 4 from the market, leaving a spot open in the Rs. 20,000 ($333/€243) smartphone segment.

Sony has seen great sales in only a few countries around the world, with India being one of them, following Japan, the vendor’s homeland market.

However, although Sony grew in this country, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is still at the top of the list, with a 43-percent market share, IDC India reveals.
