Sony Xperia ion was officially announced earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and the Japanese company promised the smartphone would go on sale in North America via AT&T.

Today, Sony officially confirmed that the Xperia ion would be introduced in Canada this summer. In fact, Sony mentioned that the device would hit shelves in July at various carriers and leading retailers.

Customers in Canada will be offered the chance to purchase the LTE version of the Xperia ion for a price that will be disclosed closer to the release date.

The bad news is that Sony Xperia ion will be shipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system on board, though the handset maker confirmed an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade would be available for download soon.

One of the strong points of the smartphone is the vibrant 4.55-inch HD LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports 720 x 1280 pixels resolution and 16 million colors. The Xperia ion screen is protected by scratch-resistant glass and features Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine technology.

It is also worth mentioning this is one of the most powerful Sony smartphones available on the market due to its 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor, which is complemented by 1GB of RAM and an Adreno 220 GPU.

There’s 16GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 32GB via a microSD memory card. Another strong trait of the device is the enhanced 12-megapixel rear camera, which features autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording.

Designed to deliver a seamless experience across multiple screens, the Xperia ion is the gateway to connected entertainment experiences when and where you want it. It is the ideal smartphone for entertainment enthusiasts looking to enjoy premium video, photography, music and gaming on their smartphone,” said Peter Farmer, VP marketing for Sony Mobile Communications.
