Following a couple of reports on the Internet that have surfaced earlier today, Sony, one of the world's leading vendors of consumer electronics and computing products, has decided to officially debut its new VAIO laptops, the much-anticipated VAIO X-series, and the new mainstream CW-series. While the former have been specifically designed for portability, boasting a thin and light design, coupled with a long battery life, the latter come as a choice for mainstream users looking for a system that offers a Blu-ray Disc optical drive and runs on Microsoft's much-anticipated Windows 7 operating system.

“It’s one thing to make a notebook thin but when you consider the fact that the X Series also boasts industry-leading battery life and wireless WAN – you now have a game changer – altering the way people use and think about their PC,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of the VAIO business group at Sony.

As anticipated, the VAIO X-series has been featured with a 2GHz Atom processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM, Intel's GMA500 graphics chip and the optional 128GB SSD. The system also offers an impressive array of ports, including two USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, VGA, Audio out and a memory card reader. There's also a WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth option, while the entire 11.1-inch system is said to weigh in at 1.5-1.6 lbs, with the standard battery. The machine is available for pre-order with a starting price tag of US$1,299.99.

The CW series offers everything you'd expect from a mainstream laptop, including support for a high-performance 2.8GHz Intel Centrino 2 CPU, up to 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk drive, Blu-ray burner and a choice for NVIDIA's GeForce GT230 or GT210 GPUs, offering VGA and HDMI ports. Also available for pre-order, this system is expected to go for US$799.99, and is scheduled to begin shipping later this month.
