Sony Xperia PLAY owners will have been pretty happy until yesterday when rumors on Sony cancelling Android 4.0 ICS for their devices emerged for the first time.

Unfortunately, the Japanese company has just announced it Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY won’t be getting the long awaited Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, even though it has been one of the first to receive an Android 4.0 beta ROM.

According to Sony, “after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Fortunately, there is some good news for Android fans who own other Sony smartphones and are waiting to get their updates as promised.

In this regard, Sony has just confirmed the ICS rollout plans for Xperia S, U and P are going according to the plans, so these phones will receive their promised updates starting from the end of June, as we previously reported.

The first smartphone to get the upgrade will be Sony Xperia S, soon followed by Xperia P. It appears that Android 4.0 ICS for Xperia U has been slightly pushed back to Q3 2012.

The rest of 2011 Xperia phones that have yet to receive the ICS update will get it beginning next week. However, Sony mentions that Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will be upgraded directly to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V devices that already got an Android 4.0.3 ICS update will be upgraded to OS 4.0.4 as well, though Sony did not provided with an exact release date. Hopefully, this update will iron out some of the issues that plague these three smartphones after the upgrade.
