The company made good sales in its Games and Network Services division

Sony has been losing money from its PC and mobile divisions, enough that it has been more than offsetting the gains everywhere else. Because of that, it expects to post a loss for the whole year of 2014.

For the second quarter of 2014, however, the three-quarter period ending on June 30 2014, Sony actually managed to return a profit.

Between 101% on-year Games and Networking Services sales, especially contributions from the PlayStation 4, it managed to amass $17.9 billion / €13.37 billion. That is around 5.8% better than the same quarter of the previous (fiscal) year.

In addition to the mobile communications business, the chip business and imaging products divisions (including digital cameras) suffered a drop. For once, though, the other business ventures made up for it.

Unfortunately, this won't really stop Sony's financial decline, to the point where the company intends to cut down 5,000 jobs. It looks like exiting the PC business isn't something that will do Sony good in the short term, even though it's supposed to help a lot in the long run.

On that note, the company intends to spin off the TV division soon as well. No exact ETA exists for either maneuver though, so we're left guessing for now.
