Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile has been long supporting the unlocking of bootloaders on its devices, and the company has decided to make the process even simpler than before.

Tempering with a smartphone in this manner can easily prove a useful action in many cases, especially when you are interested in loading custom ROMS on the device.

The company has announced a relaunch of its Unlock bootloader service, which offers improved usability, and which also enables users to unlock their devices in fewer steps than before.

Now, users will need to get only through three main steps in order to unlock the bootloader of their phones, the company notes.

Basically, they will need to select their device and enter an email address, then submit their IMEI number, and finally perform the actual unlocking via the unlock code received from the handset vendor.

“We’ve also improved the way you check whether a device is supported, we’ve revised the instructions, and we’ve made sure you’ll only get the information relevant for your particular device all the way through the unlock process,” the company notes in a blog post.

Following the update, users will no longer have to browse through a lot of information that is applicable to other devices in order to find what’s relevant for their specific handsets. An FAQ section was also added to the service.

However, the company also notes that users should not go forth and unlock the bootloader of their devices unless they are experienced developers.

“The original Sony software installed on your device is rigorously tested for great functionality, which means there is no need to unlock the boot loader for normal consumers,” Sony explains.

Those who would still want to unlock the bootloader on their devices should also keep in mind that the process may void the warranty of the device, and that some features and capabilities on these smartphones might no longer work.

Performance issues might also appear after performing this action. Moreover, in the event that the unlocking process goes downhill, the phone could even suffer physical damage, due to overheating.

Despite such risks, however, unlocking a bootloader is a pretty safe bet, especially when looking to enhance the capabilities of a device through custom ROMS.
