Sony plans to flood the market with mid-range products

On Friday, a mysterious upcoming Sony phone dubbed Lavender leaked online, showing us a device with a bezeless display.

We weren’t given additional information related to the phone spec-wise, but we supposed Lavender would be a more premium affair. After all, we heard rumors of Sony looking towards a new design language for its next-gen flagship and Lavender seemed to fit into those parameters.

However, it appears we were hoping for more a little too soon. The latest information brought to us by Upleaks reveals that Sony Lavender will be just another selfie phone. Actually, the specs are quite similar to the Xperia C4 which got unveiled not so long ago, although taken up a notch in a few cases.

The specs of Sony Lavender don't impress that much

For starters, the display is said to be a tad larger than the one seen on the Xperia C4, which dons a 5.5-inch panel. We’re not given any specifics, but Lavender could offer anything between 5.7 inches and 6 inches, like the Xperia T2 Ultra.

The phone will offer FHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and will draw power from an octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, exactly like in the case of the C4.

Other specifications include 2GB of RAM and probably 16GB of internal storage (if we’re lucky Lavender will offer the possibility to it expand via microSD card).

While the Xperia C4 offered a 13MP main shooter (with LED flash) and a 5MP selfie camera, Lavender substitutes the front snapper with a more capable 13MP unit, which makes it clear why this is dubbed a selfie phone.

The device will ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, but given the fact that Sony is gearing up to roll out Android 5.1.1 for some of its models, it’s possible that Lavender might someday be updated to the same version. The phone is also offering dual SIM capabilities.

So, as you can see, Sony is looking to introduce yet another mid-range product, which makes us wonder: what is Sony thinking?

Just last week, the company revealed the Xperia A4, which is another mid-ranger coming with a pretty worthy 20.7MP frontal shooter. On the negative side of things, the handset only offers a 4.6-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.
