Video game publisher and developer Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it is now accepting applications for the upcoming beta stage of the MMO PlanetSide 2.

In order to get into the draw for the beta stage gamers need to first create a Sony Online Entertainment Station account and then head to the official website of the game in order to get their name in.

Matthew Higby, who is the creative director working on PlanetSide 2, told Eurogamer that, “Next year is going to be HUGE for Planetside 2. We have a lot of seriously exciting stuff planned and hope you'll join us for the ride.”

PlanetSide 2 was initially known as Next and is supposed to use the same core mechanics as the first MMO in the series while updating them to the standards of the modern game scene.

The three included factions are the New Conglomerate, the Terran Republic and the Vanu Sovereignty and gamers will have to cooperate with their comrades in order to push back the enemy factions and secure strategic points.

The game will have a number of combat classes and a deep skill three for each of them, emphasizing the need to create battle teams with abilities that complement each other.

PlanetSide 2 will be different from more mainstream MMOs because it will use actual skill in addition to abilities to determine how well a gamer performs.

The launch date for PlanetSide 2 is set for the second part of 2012, although Sony has not indicate a specific date.

At the moment PlanetSide 2 has only been confirmed as arriving on the PC but ever since SOE has created DC Universe Online, another MMO, to run on both the PC and the PlayStation 3, there’s also a possibility that the game might make the same platform switch.
