Two new Xperia smartphones have just been officially announced by Japanese handset maker Sony, the Xperia go and Xperia acro S.

Both smartphones are powered by Android operating system and are slated for a Q3 global release, though Sony failed to provide any detail on pricing options.

However, the main selling point of Xperia go and Xperia acro S would be the extra durability and water resistance.

Both phones have scratch resistant mineral glass displays and are said to meet industry standard IP67and IP57 ratings for protection against dust and water immersion.

Even though Xperia go will be launched on the market in Q3, it will still be shipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box, though Sony confirmed an Ice Cream Sandwich update would be delivered afterwards.

On the other hand, the Xperia acro S will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform onboard.

They also come pre-loaded with Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited from Sony Entertainment Network giving access to Hollywood blockbusters, TV series and lots of music tracks. In addition, Xperia acro S is also PlayStation certified.

The rugged Sony Xperia go sports a 3.5-inch Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine (480 x 320 pixels), while the stylish Xperia acro S has a much larger 4.3-inch 720p HD Reality Display (1280 x 720 pixels).

Hardware-wise, Xperia go is equipped with a 1 Ghz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM, whereas the Xperia acro S features a more powerful dual-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, as well as 1GB of RAM.

The Xperia go packs only 8GB of internal memory (up to 4GB user available), while the Xperia acro S has 16GB onboard storage (up to 11GB user available). Both smartphones come with microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

Last but not least, Xperia acro S boasts an impressive 12-megapixel rear photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording, but Xperia go sports a much lower 5-megapixel main camera.

The Xperia go will be available in black, white and yellow colors, and will launch in the US market under the name “Xperia advance.” Sony Xperia acro S will go on sale in black, white and pink colors.
