The video game related division of Sony announces that it has managed to sell 16.5 million units of its PlayStation-branded home consoles in the 2013 fiscal year, which ended on March 31, with the classic PSP and Vita handhelds adding another 7 million devices.

The company does not break down its sales by versions, which makes it difficult to assess the actual performance of the PS3 and the Vita.

Overall numbers are lower because Sony has already announced that it will launch the PlayStation 4 in the fall of this year.

The company has also posted a dip in profit, but it says that the financial situation should improve for fiscal year 2014.

Sony states on the official site, “Operating income is expected to be essentially flat year-on-year primarily due to an increase in research and development expenses and marketing expenses related to the introduction of the PS4, offset by the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales.”
