It appears that Sony is definitely keeping an active presence in the display industry, as its recent activities have included not just flexible screens and the like, but also the completion of significantly enforced BRAVIA LCDs.

Those keeping track of such things on the IT market will know that this week was the time when the SID Display Week trade show was in effect.

During this occasion, many companies showed off new displays and future projects, and Sony was one of those that had some things to present.

For example, the company put on display a flexible e-paper screen that was both bendable and larger than previous projects of the type.

Now, the same company is revealed to have gotten serious in its efforts to make the BRAVIA series of LCD HDTVs tougher than ever.

More specifically, the outfit has outfitted models from that series with what is known as Corning Gorilla Glass.

“We selected Corning Gorilla Glass for its toughness,” said Brian Siegel, vice president of television business, Sony Electronics.

“The thin elegance of Corning Gorilla Glass matches the refined styling of our new BRAVIA models, helping us deliver TVs with sleek lines. These high-performance TVs are designed to offer the consumer a stunning accent piece to a living room when off, and spectacular performance when on.”

For those that want to get better acquainted with it, Corning Gorilla Glass is a 0.7mm layer that adds damage resistance thanks to being strengthened at a molecular level. 46-inch and larger BRAVIA models should now be using it.

“It’s an outstanding cover glass – lightweight, yet providing durability to help protect against everyday wear,” said John P. Bayne, division vice president, OLED and TV Cover Glass.

“Corning Gorilla Glass enables the sleek designs consumers are currently demanding in their electronics, whether it be handhelds, slates, laptops, or televisions.”
