Here's something you don't hear every day:
Sony found some problems with three PlayStation One classics available for download up on the
PS3's "
Playstation Store" and so, they were faced with pulling them. Apparently, the electronics giant found there
were technical flaws preventing the games from running properly on the PS3.
Tomshardware.co.uk reports the following: "Crash Bandicoot 2, Spyro 2, and MediEvil have all been shelved while Sony tries to fix emulation issues. "This investigation is highly technical and requires some time to work through," wrote Sony in an official response to a message board discussion on Playstation.com."
Everyone can understand that development on a certain title for the current generation may go unexpectedly wrong, but all these issues for a bunch of older titles that simply refuse running on newer hardware...? You'd think porting a game from one platform to another was Heaven on Earth for companies such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, who make older classics available on their respective consoles' online services. As you can see, it's a lot of fuss even for the company that came up with the hardware that's supposed to run them.
The piece goes on saying... "Customers who purchased the affected games will be receiving a message from Sony within the next 10 days, according to the same message board post. It also says the removal of Crash Bandicoot was mainly precautionary, adding that the title should be available for download again soon."
However, those who rushed in getting themselves Spyro 2 and MediEvil will have to wait some more. According to the same site, the two titles "are still under investigation," while the company behind the PS3 refused to comment on when the respective games will actually be fixed.
Still, Sony isn't to blame at all for this. Gamers should keep in mind that every time the company comes up with a newer system, they actually have to build on the last generation of hardware too. So when Sony rolls out PlayStation 4 they'll have PSone, PS2 and PS3 titles in mind and (probably) all their respective peripherals and accessories too. So don't be angry and just wait for Sony to do their thing.
