Sony will cut the price of its PlayStation 2 game console by about 19 percent in Japan as it gears up for PlayStation 3's launch in November, according to Reuters.
It seems the game division of the Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate currently has an "open price" policy for PS2, letting retailers set their own price. Sony sells the machine on-line for $171 (19,800 yen). Sony's new "suggested retail price" of $138 will come into effect on September 15.

Over 100 million units of PS2 were sold worldwide since its launch in 2000, and the company now wants to offer PS3 on November 11 in Japan and on November 17 in (most of) the rest of the world. Sony plans to sell a version of PS3 equipped with a 20GB hard drive for $542 (including taxes) in Japan. In the United States, the PS3 with a 20GB drive will sell for $499 (excluding tax), and the one with a 60GB drive will sell for $599 (also excluding tax).

As for the games, the newest releases for PS2 are NASCAR 07, Yakuza, Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run, and One Piece Grand Adventure. Upcoming games include NHL 07, Rule of Rose, IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix and Lego Star Wars 2 - The Original Trilogy.
