Sony has recently launched the Xperia Z3+ globally, but the smartphone was initially launched in Japan under a different name.

Since earlier this year, everyone thought Sony's upcoming flagship smartphone would be a substantial upgrade over the Xperia Z3. As soon as the Xperia Z4 was announced, many fans expressed their doubts that the new smartphone is a worthy successor of the previous flagship smartphone.

However, not everyone thought that upgrading from Xperia Z3 to Xperia Z4 isn't worthy enough. According to Sony, customers in Japan saw the Xperia Z4 as a consistent upgrade over the Xperia Z3.

On the other hand, the rest of the world didn't think it's that much better than the Xperia Z3, which is why Sony has decided to change the name to reflect customers’ feelings towards the new device.

The decision was based on consumers’ feedback

In an official statement published by The Inquirer, a Sony official says that “the main reason for the name difference here (UK) is down to Sony being such a dominant force in the Japanese market where consumers crave flagship devices with the latest features as soon as they can be delivered.

“Xperia Z3 continues to perform well as our flagship device across the rest of the world. To address those customers that would like to have the very latest features and refinements, we have introduced Xperia Z3+ as a premium addition to our existing flagship Z3 series.”

So, even though Sony feels that the Xperia Z4 has quite a few improvements over the previous model, it changed the name, more or less, based on the feedback received from customers.

“Xperia Z3 continues to perform well as our flagship device across the rest of the world. To address those customers that would like to have the very latest features and refinements, we have introduced Xperia Z3+ as a premium addition to our existing flagship Z3 series,” added Sony.

Sony Xperia Z3+ is already available for pre-order in the UK, where it's expected to hit shelves sometime in late June.
